General technical characteristics

The development of commercially available aluminum-lithium alloys was started by adding lithium to aluminum-copper, aluminum-magnesium, and aluminum-copper-magnesium alloys. These alloys were chosen in such a way as to superimpose the hardening characteristics by the deposition of existing metal bases

before solidification of lithium-containing precipitation. In this way, the alloys 2020 (Al-Cu-Li-Cd), 01429 (Al-Mg-Li), 2090 (Al-Cu-Li) and 2091 and 8090 (Al-Cu-Mg-Li) were obtained. In addition to these registered alloys, other aluminum-lithium alloys are used, in particular, Weldalite 049 and CP276.

The characteristics of the main alloys of aluminum with lithium are then considered.

Weldalite 049

Chemical composition: Cu — 5.4, Li — 1.3, Ag — 0.4, Mg — 0.4, Zr — 0.14.

Weldalite 049 demonstrates high strength in various products and conditions. Strength parameters of the alloy do not depend on the treatment temperature. The alloy has a stronger natural aging than any other known aluminum alloy.

Weldalite 049 undergoes reversion in the early stages of artificial aging, and its ductility significantly increases to 24%. The tensile strength is 700 MPa.

Weldalite 049 has good weldability. High strength of the welded seam is ensured even with welding using conventional filler.

Alloy 2090

Chemical composition: Cu — 2,7, Li — 2,2, Ag — 0,4, Zr — 0,12.

The 2090 alloy is designed as a high-strength alloy with an 8% lower density and a 10% higher modulus of elasticity than the known alloy 7075-T6, which is used in aircraft manufacturing. Mechanical and physical characteristics are not available for publication, but it is known that they are in many respects similar to the technical characteristics of modern high-strength alloys that are used in the aerospace industry. It is established that the anisotropy in the plane of the tensile properties is higher than in conventional alloys. The alloy exhibits excellent fatigue strength and resistance to corrosion. The disadvantage is a small surface resistance to oxidation during prolonged exposure to moist sea air.

Resistance to stress-corrosion cracking is highly dependent on artificial aging.

Alloy 2091

Chemical composition: Cu — 2,1, Li — 2,0, Zr — 0,10.

The 2091 alloy is more resistant to surface damage than other alloys that are used for most aircraft designs. Alloy 2091 is suitable for use in secondary structures, where high strength is not critical. Strength and corrosion resistance can be changed during heat treatment, and the microstructure of the alloy varies depending on the thickness of the initial workpiece. The alloy is resistant to the effects of cryogenic temperatures, and retains its performance characteristics when heated to 125 0 C. Mechanical strength — up to 240 MPa.

Alloy 8090

Chemical composition: Li — 2.45, Zr — 0.12, Cu — 1.3, Mg — 0.95.

The 8090 alloy is an average strength alloy with approximately 10% lower density and an 11% higher modulus of elasticity than conventionally used aluminum alloys. The alloy is available in the form of sheets, plates, extruded profiles and forgings, and can also be used for welding. Heat treatment significantly affects the basic characteristics of the alloy. Physico-mechanical properties are not available for publication, but it is known that the fatigue strength of the alloy varies with temperature fluctuations: in particular, the greatest strength and viscosity are achieved at cryogenic temperatures. The alloy is susceptible to aging, which occurs at temperatures above 1900C.
