Technical specifications

Hafnium sheets and foil of vacuum remelting are made according to the norms of TU 48−4-502−88. The main admixture in hafnium is zirconium. Hafnium is plastic, and has a characteristic silvery sheen. The metal has a close-packed hexagonal crystal structure. It has excellent mechanical properties and has extremely good corrosion resistance. However, its properties are largely influenced by the degree of zirconium impurity.

The fine powder of hafnium is pyrophoric and can spontaneously ignite in the air. Hafnium leaves and foil are resistant to concentrated alkalis, but react with oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, boron, sulfur and silicon, as well as with halogens at elevated temperatures.

Urgency of application

Hafnium sheets and foil have a good absorption cross section for thermal neutrons (approximately 600 times greater than that of zirconium). Therefore, they are actively used in nuclear technologies. Other practical applications of hafnium are gas-filled lamps and incandescent lamps, as well as getters for oxygen and nitrogen and ultrasonic technologies.
